FreeCrawl SEO — UI Translation Glossary

The interface ships in 11 languages. At roughly 2,400 strings per locale, the biggest quality risk is not mistranslation but inconsistency — "crawl" rendered three different ways inside one language makes the product read as machine-translated. This file is the reference every locale is written against.

Scope: the terms below recur across the whole UI (sidebar, column headers, settings, dialogs, reports). One-off phrasing is left to the translator's judgement.

1. Terms kept in English in every locale

These are protocol names, file names, standards, and metric acronyms. They are what the user searches the web for, and translating them makes the UI harder to use, not easier.

Product and vendor names are never translated: FreeCrawl SEO, Screaming Frog, Google, Googlebot, Chromium, Playwright, LanguageTool, Apache, Nginx, IIS, Slack, Zapier, Discord, OpenAI, Anthropic, Ollama, BigQuery, Excel.

Also untranslated in every locale, by existing policy: regexes, CSS selectors, XPath expressions, example URLs, HTTP header names and values, and sample cell values (200, 301, 404, 500).

3. Style rules per locale

  • es / pt-BR / fr / it — use the infinitive for button labels and menu actions (Exportar, Exporter, Esportare → but prefer the established UI convention: Exportar / Exporter / Esporta). Address the user in the register each locale already ships: es and it use tú / tu imperatives (Abre…, Apri…), fr uses vous (Ouvrez…) and pt-BR uses você (Abra…). Keep new strings in that register — switching register inside one language reads as machine translation.
  • ru — button labels are imperative verbs or verbal nouns (Экспорт, Остановить). Respect the three plural forms (_one / _few / _many / _other).
  • tr / az — button labels are verbal nouns (Dışa Aktar, Durdur). Neither language inflects a noun after a numeral, so both plural categories carry identical text. Azerbaijani is not Turkish: prefer native forms (keçid not bağlantı, sorğu not istek, parametrlər not ayarlar) and watch for false friends.
  • zh-CN — Simplified characters, no spaces around CJK text, full-width punctuation (,。:) inside prose but keep ASCII punctuation around Latin tokens and in technical strings. One plural category only (_other).
  • ko — use -기 verbal nouns for buttons (내보내기, 저장하기 → prefer the shorter 저장). Formal -습니다 register in prose. One plural category only (_other).
  • hi — Devanagari. Keep widely-used English loanwords in Latin script when that is what practitioners actually write (URL, SEO, क्रॉल). Two plural categories (_one / _other).

4. Plural categories by locale

i18next selects the form via Intl.PluralRules, so each locale must supply exactly the categories CLDR defines for it. Verified against Node's ICU rather than from memory — several of these are counter-intuitive:

Locale Categories Notes
en, tr, az _one, _other 0 → other
hi _one, _other 0 → one ("0 पृष्ठ", singular)
es, it _one, _many, _other 0 → other; _many fires at 10⁶
fr, pt-BR _one, _many, _other 0 → one; _many at 10⁶
ru _one, _few, _many, _other 1/21/31 → one; 2–4/22–24 → few; 0/5–20 → many; fractions → other
zh-CN, ko _other no grammatical number

Two consequences worth remembering:

  • _many is not "a lot of" in the Romance locales — it fires only from 1,000,000, where Spanish and Portuguese insert de ("1.000.000 de URL"). Omitting it falls back to _other, which is merely slightly wrong at that scale, not broken.
  • Russian _other is for non-integers only. The form a Russian user actually sees for 0 and for 5–20 is _many, so _many must read naturally — it is the most common form in practice, not an edge case.

A missing category falls back to _other; a category CLDR does not define for a locale is dead weight and is never selected.
